The Aviator Experience Story
RNZAF Aermacchi MB339
A Military Aviation Obsession
Craig Saunders' lifelong passion for military aviation takes flight in the heart of Thames, NZ.

The Obsession
From a young age, Craig was obsessed with the world of military aviation. His military journey began as a young teen, with the New Zealand Air Training Cadets, where he earned a flying scholarship. At 19, Craig joined the Royal New Zealand Air Force, where after studying harder than he'd ever studied before, he became an avionic technician. After working on Aermacchi jets and Andovers, he eventually left the Air Force after seven years when the RNZAF sold all their jets and his role became less exciting.

After the Air Force
Transitioning into the world of IT, Craig's passion for aviation found a new outlet. He developed a military flight simulator for home, which eventually became the founding simulator for The Aviator Experience at Tauranga Airport. Integrating VR technology and motion platforms was a groundbreaking innovation which lead to a one of a kind, motion F-18 cockpit simulator which will soon be back in operation.

Covid Turbulence
The journey hasn’t been without its turbulence. Due to COVID-19, the Tauranga Airport site was closed, leading to a challenging transition period. But Craig's dedication kept the spirit alive, and we successfully reopened in Thames, bringing even more excitement and adventure to our new community.
